The owner of this commercial fruit farm loves planting trees, in particular oaks. Over the last fifteen years he has planted approximately 300 different varieties!
Since 2012 I've been involved in various farm 'beautification' projects including the creation of two arboretums. The main arboretum covers an area of approximately five acres and already had a few existing young trees plus a very mature multi-stemmed oak taking centre stage. New planting included groupings of trees such as different varieties of Birches, Rowans, Acers, Crab apples and Cherries, plus lower storey shrub planting including Dogwoods, Hazel and Spindle. More unusual plantings included Monkey Puzzles, Dawn Redwoods, Persian Ironwoods and Liquidambers. Majestic Wellingtonias and other conifers are dotted along the northern boundary.
A new track winds through the arboretum, linking the clients house to other parts of the farm, taking advantage of various viewing points along the way. Mown paths and open glades give a sense of journey around the site and, as things mature, will give light and shade.
