The existing drive in the front garden had been constructed with an inadequate sub-base and an overly deep layer of chunky gravel which meant that vehicles tended to make ruts in the gravel. This was addressed with a new sub-base, a finer more decorative pea gravel and a stone pedestrian path leading to the front door of the property. The hard landscaping is lifted by an exuberant planting mix of shrubs, grasses and perennials including pittosporums, nepeta, salvias, sedums, molinia and stipa. A flowering dogwood tree on the left of the drive gives height and structure.
The back garden is accessed through a timber pergola which helps to separate the back garden from the drive at the side of the house. A raised pond constructed from timber sleepers sits next to the already existing garden office. Planting to the right of the garden office includes the rice-paper plant (on the right), a chusan palm, hakone grasses and a claret coloured astrantia giving an exotic Japanese feel to the space.
